Rukhmabai was a doctor and a champion of women’s rights in 19th and 20th century India. She directly challenged rigid Hindu Laws of the time by refusing to live with her husband to whom she was married off to as a child. She also successfully approached Queen Victoria to intervene on her behalf in the matter, stating that the decision to get married was not hers.
